LSSS is now open source

The software, which IMR has developed together with NORCE Research, is used to analyse fishery acoustic data and interpret information from echo sounders and sonar to identify species such as herring, capelin and mackerel and calculate stock sizes.

And now scientists, engineers, students, other geeks like us can use (and adapt and further develop!) the software as much as they want.

"International research projects are increasingly asking for open and transparent analysis tools. So then we give them what they want," says research director Rolf Korneliussen.

The opening up provides new opportunities for collaboration, and makes it easier to standardize and compare data across countries and institutions. This is an important step towards more transparent, efficient and verifiable marine research and resource management.
